Invited Workshop: The Politics of Composition

Tom Tlalim (Speaker)

Activity: Talk or presentation typesInvited talk

By invitation of the MA Master of Arts Solo/ Dance/ Authorship (SODA) at the Inter-University Center for Dance (IZT) of the Universität der Künste (UDK) Berlin, I am giving a day-long workshop for MA and PhD students in the arts.

The workshop draws on my artwork and research, highlighting the importance of material, contextual, evidential and political considerations in the interdisciplinary composition process.

Working with participants whose bodies and voices testify on structural violence, emphasises the politics of composition while also presenting an opportunity for restructuring and reconfiguring how materials representation and power relations. These opportunities can emerge throughout the artistic process as well as in the context of presentation; the venues, their histories, traditions around temporal organisation, audiences and their geometry. All of these elements play part in the framing of the composition and give rise to ethical and political questions
