Archaeology of the Royal Hunting Lodges

Project Details

Description

Excavation at the site of Church Place, Denny Wait, near Lyndhurst. Church Place is a rectangular earthwork enclosure, approximately 40m², legally protected as a Scheduled Ancient Monument by Historic England and requiring consent to excavate. Excavation in 2016 and 2017 revealed evidence to date the construction of the earthwork to the late 14th century, however no evidence was found of internal structures and the site has been interpreted as probably a temporary meeting place, or encampment supporting the royal hunting activity. Underlying the medieval remains a previously unknown, and very significant, late Neolithic or Early Bronze Age enclosure was also revealed.
