Abstract

This is the first of two volumes that explore contemporary issues in information and media literacy. Undoubtedly, such forms of literacy are current and exciting topics. As the chapters in this and the accompanying volume show information and media literacy presents new and demanding challenges to policy makers, education managers, teachers and educational practitioners and perhaps above all, students. Literacy, be it information, media, digital, visual or any number of a rapidly growing forms of literacy must be understood as the result of educational activity. Literacy comes through learnt practice and educational activity is the formalization of such activity. The chapters in these volumes explore the practice, necessity and interpretation of such education.
