Abstract

This chapter will explore the meaning and the evolution of the concept of punishment, focusing on its relations to society. It will specifically analyse its ties with political economy, showing how different criminologists have so far described the connection between certain aspects of the economic world and the diffusion of certain forms of punishments — especially imprisonment—with a particular function, useful, from time to time, to the overall government of society.
