Authentic and Meaningful Participation in Heritage or Related Activities

Project Details

Description

The AMPHORA guidelines are for heritage-based interventions which aim to support mental health and wellbeing. The guidelines are the result of a series of research projects involving stakeholders, and are designed to unlock the full therapeutic potential of the historic environment, in which participants are contributing fully and authentically to projects which, in turn, are able to provide the right support and safeguarding.

A HEIF grant from the University of Winchester has now supported the production of a set of three guidance documents, intended to help service providers better understand and address their responsibilities; social prescribers/ link workers to gauge the quality of support that should be offered to individuals they might be considering referring to heritage-based therapeutic services; and to give potential participants a better understanding of what they might expect in terms of support.

Layman's description

Taking part in heritage projects, like archaeology, has become a really popular way to improve mental health and wellbeing and they really can help people. But there can be times when projects might not have the right set up to make sure that the participants and the historic remains are well looked after.

A research project brough together a panel of 44 stakeholders with experience of living with mental health issues and also people with expertise in mental health and heritage. This nine month consultation, concluded in November 2021, resulted in a set of best practice guidelines to help make sure that people are safe and supported when they take part and that we take care of the things and places that mean something to us. These guidelines have now been converted into three accessible guidance documents to help service providers, social prescribers and potential participants better understand their responsibilities and what they might expect from the experience.
