Electronic Database of Animals Known in England, c.500 – c. 1100

Project Details

Description

The main outcome of the project will be my second monograph, accompanied by a freely-accessible online database. This will eventually be the first integrated catalogue of every kind of available evidence (linguistic, literary, and archaeological) pertaining to the types and distributions of animals attested in Anglo-Saxon England (c. 500 to c. 1100 AD). In addition to offering a comprehensive overview of all animals known to have lived here, it places particular emphasis on showing how animals were perceived and categorised differently in this period to how they are today, with a search functionality and ability to browse the Anglo-Saxon and/or present-day names of these animals to see how and where these match up and differ.
